Need to cut back on some of those expenses? Considering dumping pay TV. Before you click off this story for being pure insanity, know that you don’t need to give up TV to give up paying for TV.

It’s true — there is plenty of free TV out there for the taking. Free TV channels are known as OTA (over the air) channels, the same that you or your parents (or grandparents) used to tap into back when “don’t touch that dial” actually meant the dial on the TV.

Of course, OTA has come a long way since the rabbit ears from days of yore. Thanks to the 2009 digital transition, free TV is easy to access. It also looks great, with many channels available with HD-quality. Yes, HD… absolutely free.

To get these channels, you’re going to have to invest in an antenna. Roof antennas look a lot different these days. I have the Antennas Direct ClearStream4 Antenna, which gets great reception, without being a big eyesore on top of my house. Of course, the idea of climbing onto the roof doesn’t appeal to a lot of people. An antenna like the Terk/Audiovox Amplified Directional Indoor HDTV Antenna and Mohu Leaf Plus Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna can just as easily go into the attic or another area that has an unobstructed view of the outside.

Basically, you’re going to have to play around with where to put the antenna in your home. Once you find that perfect spot, however, there’s still some tweaking to do.

First of all, buy a compass. Yes, this $5 investment can save you a lot of headaches — and trips out to the roof. Once you have the compass, pair it with data on AntennaWeb.org. Websites like this one will help you hone the perfect spot for your antenna, so that you get the best reception and the most free channels.

Now, don’t expect to go tuning into HBO or anything, but with the right antenna and positioning, you can get 25 or more channels — absolutely free. If you don’t want to totally ditch that monthly bill, the Channel Master CM7400 HD DVR or TiVo Premiere HD DVR can add in DVR service into the OTA mix for a fee.

About a week ago, Derek Low became an Internet sensation. The Berkeley College freshman uploaded a YouTube video showing off his automated dorm room, known as B.R.A.D.
